My Best Father’s Day
I am so grateful to be a dad and even more grateful that there is a designated day in each year that has been set aside to recognize the roles of fathers within a family. But it has been holidays like “Father’s Day” that has taught me a few things about myself that I am appreciative of knowing.
I have been married for 4 years now and have been a father for 3 of those years. I can remember my first Father’s Day receiving a hammer with “I love building memories with you dad” on it and maybe a card, and of course I thought it was a sweet gift. When year two came around I can remember the gift of a shirt, a tie possibly a card and was quite appreciative.
However, I soon began to realize something about myself. I realized gifts made me anxious for some strange reasons, especially for holidays and I wondered why being that my wife is the absolute opposite. We eventually read a book called, The 5 Love Languages, which revealed the reason for this. I found out that I am not a person of gifts, which in result makes me poor at giving gifts.
I found out that of my top love languages, “words of affirmation” was highly ranked. Which has inspired this blog. Yesterday, was not traditional as it has been. I did not wake up to a surprise gift bag as I was expecting. The day just continued on as a regular day. I began to get worried, wondering did my dislike of gifts make her completely forget to even acknowledge me on this day.
But I was wrong! I believe she was keeping in mind my own personal love language. After evening church service, she took me to an Italian Restaurant because it’s my favorite food, she sat across the table from and in pure admiration she took the next few moments to express how much her and Jaleah are appreciatetive of me.
I am so grateful to God for a wife, who is willing to recognize my needs and selflessly meet them. Yesterday she was able to build me up in the simplest way possible.
